Stories, rhymes and songs for little ones at the Gananoque library — hand games, songs and simple stories, built as much around the grown-ups meeting each other as the children. Free and drop-in, Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:00am.

A free after-school drop-in for older kids and teens at the library, Wednesdays 3:30–5:30 pm. No registration, no fee — just turn up.

Thousand Islands Playhouse · Theatre & acting · ages 14–18 · Thousand Islands Playhouse, Gananoque
A full-semester, for-credit high-school programme run inside a professional theatre, in partnership with local school boards. Students spend the fall on site at the Playhouse learning carpentry, costuming, performance, scenic painting, prop-making, sound and lighting and stage management from working theatre professionals, then pick a specialism and collaborate on a production staged in the Firehall Theatre. They also see professional shows including Shaw and Stratford, and finish by designing and teaching their own workshops for elementary classes.
Schedule: Full fall semester, on site at the Playhouse, for high-school credit
Cost: Free — the Playhouse fundraises each year so students and families pay nothing
It replaces a semester of school rather than sitting on top of it — students earn credits through local school boards.
Deliberately free: the Playhouse runs a fundraising campaign each year so no family pays to take part.
Not only for performers — carpentry, costume, props, lighting, sound and stage management are all routes in.

A free half-hour of curling for kids on Wednesday afternoons through the winter season. One of the very few genuinely no-cost weekly activities in the corridor.

It's free — no season fee at all, which is unusual for ice sport.
Wednesdays 4:00–4:30 pm during the curling season.

Gananoque Minor Hockey · Hockey · ages 7–17 · Lou Jeffries Arena, 600 King St E, Gananoque
Recreational house-league hockey in the Inter-Community Hockey League, with an emphasis on skill development and fair play. Season runs mid-October to the ICHL Championship Days in early March.

Travel is real but regional — Frontenac, Loyalist, Deseronto, Napanee, Prince Edward County, Stirling and Stone Mills.
Each team gets one weekly 50-minute practice, sometimes shared between two teams.
Most games are Friday evening through Sunday evening.

The competitive stream, playing in the Eastern Ontario Minor Hockey League from October to the end of March, with OMHA playdowns after that.

Travel is a bigger commitment than local league — Bancroft, Brighton, Campbellford, Douro, Lakefield, Norwood, Peterborough-area centres and more.
GMHA provides one practice a week; any extra ice the team wants is at the team's own expense.
They're explicit that rep is for families who want a higher level of competition — worth reading that line before signing up.
Gananoque Minor Hockey · Hockey · ages 4–4 · Lou Jeffries Arena, 600 King St E, Gananoque
The gentlest way onto the ice: about 20 weekly 50-minute sessions from mid-September to early March, on a third of the rink, Saturday or Sunday mornings. The coaches run games designed to get kids up on their feet and taking first strides.

Full equipment is required even at this level — helmet with cage, neck guard, the lot.
It's one 50-minute session a week, weekend mornings only, so it doesn't eat the whole weekend.
New registrants' parents must complete the Respect in Sport parent course before the season starts.

The step up from learn-to-skate, and the year parents are most often amazed by the progress. Heavy focus on skating first, with puck handling and shooting introduced as skill allows. Kids are grouped by experience, not just age.

Two 50-minute weekend sessions for the full experience, or one for the introductory option — roughly 40 or 20 sessions across the season.
They recommend your child can stand up unassisted on skates before registering for U7.
Ice times are weekends only and can shift slightly week to week.

Skate Canada's learn-to-skate program, run by a club that's been going since 1955 and is a designated CanSkate Excellence Club. Programs run from Pre-CanSkate through CanSkate and Advanced CanSkate.
Cost: $650 all-in for one evening a week (Pre-CanSkate or CanSkate, Tuesday or Wednesday), $950 for Advanced CanSkate on both — Skate Canada and fundraising fees included
Sessions start the week of October 6, 2026 and run to March 2027 at the Lou Jeffries Recreation Centre; register on the club's Uplifter site.

Swiftwind Equine Center · Horseback riding · ages 6–18 · Swiftwind Farms, Lyndhurst
Riding and horsemanship on a working 100-acre beef and cash-crop farm just under an hour from Kingston. Lessons run from a child's very first time in the saddle through to show-ring preparation, with achievement badges along the way.

It's a real working farm, not just a lesson barn — kids get the agriculture alongside the riding.
They run non-rider horse activities too, which is useful if one sibling is keen and the other is nervous.
Lyndhurst is a genuine drive from Kingston; check lesson times before committing to a weekly slot.
Thousand Islands Minor Football League · Football · ages 8–13 · Gananoque Secondary School field, 175 William St S
Youth tackle football in a league that's been running more than a decade across Kingston, Sydenham and Gananoque. Three divisions — Atom, Pee Wee and Bantam — with six teams in each.

No instructor — this is free skating time, not a lesson.
Helmets are expected; most families bring a CSA hockey helmet.

Thousand Islands Playhouse · Theatre & acting · Camp · ages 8–16 · Thousand Islands Playhouse, Gananoque
A five-day March Break camp at the professional waterfront theatre in Gananoque, open to any student in grades 3 to 8 whether they have performed before or never set foot on a stage. The week ends with a pizza party and a free performance for family and friends in the Firehall Theatre. Students in grades 9 and 10 can instead join the Counsellor in Training programme, earning volunteer hours in a summer camp session while learning group management, conflict resolution and professional skills like resume writing and interviews from an OCT-certified educator.

2027 dates, pricing and registration aren't posted yet — the Playhouse says they're coming.
No experience needed: it's explicitly aimed at first-timers as much as at kids who already have the theatre bug.
Grades 9-10 have a separate route — the Counsellor in Training programme earns volunteer hours rather than costing camp fees.

A watersports-and-arts sleepaway camp south of Bancroft where campers build their own daily schedule — the wakeboarding and waterski program is the standout. The 2026 season has finished. Next summer's dates and registration haven't been posted yet.

A Christian overnight camp on Lake Wolfe with junior, senior, canoe-trip and day-camp options. The 2026 season has finished.
Cost: $425 (3 nights) to $1,695 (2-week teen program)
Day camp registration opens in January, alongside campground bookings.
2026 pricing was Jump Start $425, Junior Camp $850, Senior Camp $850, Explorer Canoe Trip $850 and Day Camp $200 a week including hot lunch.
A deposit holds the place — $100 for summer camps, $75 Jump Start, $50 day camp — with the balance due June 15. After June 15 it is full payment up front.
Camp Kagama · Community & multi-sport · Camp · ages 6–15 · Morrison Island, St. Lawrence River
A small not-for-profit overnight camp on the St. Lawrence, going since 1936 — just 48 campers a session. A traditional programme: canoeing, swimming, hiking, sports, arts and crafts, campfires and singalongs, with Grace at meals and Vespers about tolerance and respect. Summer 2026 has finished; registration for summer 2027 has not opened yet.

The online registration store still lists only the 2026 season and has no sessions in it, so there is nothing to book for 2027 yet — the camp says to check back.
Only 48 campers per session, by design — it's deliberately small.

An overnight camp near Arden built for campers aged 6 and up with autism, ADHD, OCD, Down Syndrome, anxiety or social difficulties — two campers per staff member. You choose a session from one to eight weeks. The 2026 season ran June 28 to August 22 and has finished.

Applications for 2027 go through the camp's CampBrain portal (the Apply Now button). You create an account there before you can see the form. The camp replies with an acceptance or a place on its waiting list, so earlier is better.
Camp Opemikon (Scouts Canada) · Community & multi-sport · Camp · ages 5–15 · Christie Lake, southwest of Perth
An 80-year-old Scouts Canada camp on Christie Lake that welcomes non-Scouts too — archery, low ropes, paddling and backcountry options, in tents or cabins. The 2026 season has finished. Next summer's dates and registration haven't been posted yet.

Sessions run from half-weeks up to two weeks, and payment plans are available.

A classic private overnight camp on Otter Lake, about 90 minutes from Kingston. Summer 2026 has finished. Registration for summer 2027 opens to new families in mid-November.

A family-owned boys' sleepaway camp on Baptiste Lake since 1947, teaching sailing, canoeing and riding as proper week-long courses.

Boys 11 and up attend the four-week session.
Camp Quin-Mo-Lac · Community & multi-sport · Camp · ages 7–15 · Moira Lake, Tweed
The most affordable full week of sleepaway camp in the region, on Moira Lake near Tweed. A United Church camp that welcomes all faiths, running for over 70 years. The 2026 season has finished. Next summer's dates and registration haven't been posted yet.

Sessions ran from late June to late August 2026 at $518 for the four-night Mini Coed and $795 for a full week.

The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa's sleepaway camp on Mink Lake, with honour-system pricing: pay the reduced rate if you need it, no questions asked. The 2026 season has finished.

A completely free sleepaway camp near Perth for families living below the Low Income Measure — three 8-day sessions each summer.

They've historically served Ottawa and Lanark families — confirm Kingston eligibility before applying.

Circle Square Ranch Big Clear Lake · Community & multi-sport · Camp · ages 6–16 · Big Clear Lake, Arden

A Western horse-ranch sleepaway camp near Arden, run by the Christian organization InterVarsity — trail rides or daily riding lessons on top of classic camp. The 2026 season has finished. Next summer's dates and registration haven't been posted yet.

A four-day, three-night leadership programme for 13-to-17-year-olds at Elbow Lake — the step between camper and counsellor. The 2026 programme ran July 7-10, sold out, and has finished.

Completing it can earn 33-50 community service hours, and strong participants are invited back to volunteer at regular camp sessions at no cost.

The gentlest first-sleepaway format in the region: Monday-to-Friday overnight weeks on the Ottawa River, with a 4-day mini version for ages 6-8 and female, male and all-gender cabins. Summer 2026 has finished; the registration portal is still on the 2026 season, so summer 2027 sign-ups are not open yet. Spaces fill quickly when they do.

They run virtual information sessions through the year and a drop-in open house at camp in the spring — worth doing before a first sleepaway.
Camp Otonabee also runs outdoor DAY camps for ages 4 to 11, both general and specialty streams — worth knowing if a full sleepaway week is too big a first step.

A week of hands-on mathematics for girls entering Grade 9, led by mathematicians, statisticians and physicists at Queen's. You can choose the overnight version with five nights in residence, or come as a day camper. The 2026 season has finished. Next summer's dates and registration haven't been posted yet.

Math Quest 2026 ran August 10-14, with both an overnight residential option and a commuter day-camp option.
Campers must be entering Grade 9 or returning to high school in September.

Lots of sports have a provincial or national association fee on top of the program price — usually charged once a year, often in the middle of summer. We flag these on each program's page under "Also budget for." The usual suspects:
This one spans many activities — hockey, dance, cheerleading, basketball and more — and it can start younger than you'd think. The moment your child joins a competitive or rep stream, some events happen in other cities, and none of that is in the registration fee. There's no standard price tag (it depends entirely on how many events and how far), but every away weekend is built from the same pieces:
Questions to ask before the season starts:
Before tryouts, ask for last season's tournament list. The city names tell you more about the real budget than anything on the registration page — and it's a much easier conversation to have before your child makes the team than after.
Many competitive clubs — gymnastics and swimming especially — ask each family to commit volunteer hours, usually scaled to how many hours your child trains. Finish your hours and it costs nothing; leave them unfinished and the club bills the difference at season's end, often around $100 for every hour not volunteered. It's not a cash grab: these clubs run on parent power, and every volunteered hour helps keep everyone's fees down. But for an already-busy family it can be a real surprise — a cost paid in time, and expensive to buy your way out of.
What to know before you commit:
Budget the hours the way you budget the fees. Two working parents and a couple of kids' schedules can make ten volunteer shifts genuinely hard to find — it's much easier to plan them in September than to discover the bill in June.
Plenty of Kingston organizations quietly knock money off for siblings, second classes, or just for asking — and a few let your kid try before you pay anything. Nobody puts this on the front page, so here's every one we've verified so far. Each links to the listing; the same note appears on the program's own page.

When a discount isn't posted, ask anyway. Several clubs told us their family rates exist but aren't written down anywhere. The worst answer is no — and know one whose discount we've missed? Use the button below and we'll add it.
A discount is a price anyone can get. This is different — money set aside for the families who need it, and almost none of it is on a front page. It tends to appear once, in small type, halfway down a registration page, and then wait to be asked about. Several of these funds exist because other parents donated to them.
Two things worth knowing before the list. Most places want you to register or apply for a place first and settle the money afterwards, so don’t hold off signing up while you wait to hear. And where a form asks what you can contribute, an honest partial amount is genuinely useful — it’s how a small fund reaches more families.
Bursaries, campership funds & subsidies
Ask even where we haven’t listed one. This is the least-advertised thing on any club’s website, and an organization with no page about it may still have a quiet fund or know exactly who to point you to. Deadlines are the thing to watch — several of these close months before the season starts. The worst answer is no.
Deep breath. Yes, it's the expensive one — but it's less scary if you know the numbers going in, and much less scary if you buy smart. Kids grow out of gear long before they wear it out, which means Kingston is swimming in barely-used equipment.

Class fees are the part you see when you register. The rest of the dance year arrives in pieces — shoes in the fall, a costume in the spring, tickets to the recital. None of it is enormous on its own; it's the timing that catches people out. Here's the shape of a year.
What to know before you register:
The costume invoice usually lands in late spring, close to the recital itself — months after you paid for classes, when nobody is expecting another dance bill. Ask in September what the spring will look like, and it stops being a surprise.

ActivityScoop is a directory you read, not a service you sign up for. No accounts, no profiles — and the little data we do handle is listed below, all of it. Last updated: August 1, 2026.
If you use the age filter ("only want what fits your kids?"), those ages are saved in your own browser and never sent to us. Same for your saved list — the hearts live on your device, not with us. Clearing your browser data clears both.
We ask first: a one-time choice at the bottom of your screen. Say yes and a visit-counting service tallies which pages get read, which activities parents look for, roughly which towns visitors browse from. It's statistics, not identities: no names, and addresses are anonymized. Say no and nothing is counted; the site works exactly the same. Change your mind anytime with "Cookie choice" in the footer.
Signing up stores exactly one thing — your email address — with the service that sends the Sunday brief on our behalf. You confirm by email first (that's the law in Canada, and also just polite), every issue has a one-click unsubscribe, and the list is never sold, rented, or shared. Ever.
When you suggest an organization, report a fix, or leave a note for the next parent, we receive what you typed — plus your name or email if the form asked for it. A real person reads it and uses it to improve the listing, and that's the whole journey. Published parent notes never include contact details.
Aggregate, anonymous statistics — things like "swim listings were viewed 400 times in July." Numbers like these may appear in reports or be shared with the organizations and sponsors that keep the site free for parents. They're about pages, never about people: nothing in them can identify you or your kids.
A few outside services do the plumbing — one hosts the site and receives what you type into forms, one holds the newsletter list, one counts visits (and only after you say yes). Each sees just what its job requires, and we keep no servers or databases of our own. Some of these services are based outside Canada, so data may be processed in the United States. We check provider websites on a regular schedule and stamp every listing with a "last verified" date — but details change on the provider's side without warning, and sometimes faster than we can catch. So the site is offered as-is: always confirm with the provider before making plans or paying anyone. If something here is wrong, tell us and we'll fix it for every parent who comes after you — but decisions you make based on a listing are between you and the provider, and we can't accept responsibility for their programs, prices, schedules, cancellations, or anything that happens at an activity.
